Adam Carmichael

A collaboration with Design Agency and operator Oliver & Bonacini, Leña Restaurante is a three floor restaurant set in Saks Fifth Avenue's Toronto flagship location. The design retains the building's Art Deco architectural element and features a focal bar, private event spaces that are connected to a private shopping area, dining, and a subterranean bar.

This collaboration with Menino Design Studio and design-savvy clients was to support the renovation and redesign of their one-story Mid Century Modern ranch, we found a balance between inherent qualities and modern enhancements.

It was originally designed by architect David Lynch in 1960 and is reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie design from the early 20th century. The original heated slate floors, stone walls, stunning fireplace, wood finishes and overall structure were faithfully restored to original condition.

The open floor plan with floor-to-ceiling windows opening to the outdoor courtyards allows the nature and light to flood seamlessly into the space.

While searching for a space to start her own practice in NYC, Dr Erin Kil was presented an opportunity in an old Peleton location in the Archives Building in the West Village.

Along with Menino Design, our team developed a calming, spa-like design featuring a sophisticated palette with natural materials that celebrate the existing architectural details. The project was featured in Hospitality Design.

High above Carnegie Hall and the Russian Tea Room - in the clouds above Manhattan - this sleek, expansive flat overlooks Central Park in the Metropolitan Tower, a classic Post-modern skyscraper.

A true partnership with Menino Design Studio and the Clients, this minimalist beauty is reinforced by exquisite detail and punctuated with striking natural stone, saturated color, textures, and bold patterned prints. The project was recently featured on NBC's Open House.

Sophie's, as a concept, was internally developed to establish a new direction for in-store upscale dining at Saks Fifth Avenue. It is named after Sophie Gimbel, who served as the designer for the Salone Moderne of Saks and was the first American fashion designer to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine. A collaboration with Andre Kikoski Architect (New York City) the restaurant (operated by Fifth Dining) features a bar with lounge, private event space, and dining room with sweeping views of the Chicago skyline on the Magnificent Mile.

Collaboration with FRCH Design Worldwide (Cincinnati and New York City) that incorporates Saks Fifth Avenue's first flagship in Canada within 4 floors of space in Hudson's Bay at Eaton Centre in Toronto.

The Atelier, just steps from Central Park, is a pre-war building that once served as grand artist residences with separate adjacent working studio spaces. Such artsits as dadaist Marcel Duchamp and illustrator James Montgomery Flagg, who created the Uncle Sam ‘I Want Yo'u’ Army recruitment posters.

This collaboration with Menino Design Studio converted one of the studios into a true one bedrooom by swapping the sleeping alcove and the enclosed kitchen.

The client’s incredible art collection was prominently and purposefully installed throughout the space, including a grand salon-style display wall.

Collaboration with Contour Interior Design (Houston) to update and relocate 51fifteen Restaurant and Bar (Landmark Houston Hospitality Group) with Saks Fifth Avenue at The Houston Galleria. The location boasts a full bar with lounge, private event space, and dining room.

Collaboration with Contour Interior Design (Houston) to update and relocate Bar 12 (Landmark Houston Hospitality Group) with Saks Fifth Avenue at The Houston Galleria. The bar is centrally located and enveloped by the sweeping ribbon-like stair where guests can enjoy espresso beverages, handcrafted cocktails, wine, and upscale bar fare.

Collaboration with CBX (New York City) completely relocating Saks Fifth Avenue within the center, growing the square footage and developing a new level of luxury within the fleet. The space includes a new restaurant and satellite bar.

A collaboration with Moncur Design Associates and operator Oliver & Bonacini, Beaumont Kitchen features a restaurant, bar, and lounge with a large living room-like environment. The interior is designed to be welcoming with elements including rich textures, whimsical accents and features plush seating and banquettes, formal dining tables, and relaxed bar seating - all making it ideal for long business lunches, midday snacks, casual dinners, and special occasions. Beaumont Kitchen is a fashionable all-day dining lounge that balances comfort and sophistication.

The cuisine is chef-driven and rooted in quality, showcasing fresh, seasonal, and locally-sourced ingredients creatively and honestly. With a deep understanding of and respect for food, it is meant to be enjoyed guilt-free with a healthy-meets-indulgent menu that excites, nourishes, and satisfies.

Collaboration with Jeffrey Hutchison Associates (New York City) to relocate the Men's Store from a street level space into the main building across the street, involving adding an exclusive elevator that takes the clients directly to the Men's Floors. The space incorporates a new restaurant called Sophie's, named after Sophie Gimbel, fashion designer and wife to Adam Gimbel, a former President of Saks Fifth Avenue.

Saks Fifth Avenue's first Food Hall is operated by Pusateri's. A collaboration with Alex Rebanks Architects and Pusateri's, the Food Hall offers an unparalleled, diverse collection of gourmet fare, featuring fresh produce, artisanal and imported goods, cheese, meats, sweets, and wines all set within a luxurious market experience.

Collaboration with Janson Goldstein (New York City) to relocate Saks Fifth Avenue to a new center, the first new store in over a decade for the company.

The PAVE Organization (Planning and Visual Education) is dedicated to students pursuing careers in retail interior design and visual merchandising and connects them with educators and professionals who support the retail industry in a vibrant, meaningful, and mentoring format. Each December, the Gala is the crowning event for the foundation to support students and recognize excellence in the industry. In 2016, I was honored to lead the event design, creative, and decor, which was held at the Duggal Greenhouse in Brooklyn, NY which featured an awe-inspiring space and sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline. Our committee orchestrated the entire event atmosphere including the lighting design, imagery, stage, open kitchen, tables, seating, settings, and centerpieces.

Collaboration with Janson Goldstein (New York City) to bring Saks Fifth Avenue to San Juan, Puerto Rico designed simultaneously with the Sarasota, Florida location which features an open plan, incorporating modern design elements paired with luxurious finishes and sculptural architectural elements.

Collaboration with FRCH Design Worldwide (Cincinnati and New York City) to break out Saks Fifth Avenue's iconic 10022-SHOE from the main store and open a nearby satellite location, creating a campus environment. 

Collaboration with Found Associates (London) to create a new downtown location featuring lifestyle merchandising and a minimalist aesthetic as a stark contrast to the original flagship on Fifth Avenue.

When Jones Apparel Group acquired the Anne Klein New York brand, the internal team developed a space that honored the brand heritage, utilizing natural materials and elements that harkened to the clothing inidicative to her label.

As the design lead of the internal team, I utilized sketches and 3D Studio Max software to translate the New York City Showroom into a vision for the international retail concept.

Working with newly appointed designer Isabel Toledo and her husband Ruben, the internal design team envisioned a new showroom for an elevated faction of the Anne Klein brand, inspired by Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion.

The internal design team developed a residentially-inspired showroom space for the mother brand of Jones Apparel Group - Jones New York

Jones Apparel Group sought to create a retail space in which the company could sell shoe and accessories merchandise from various brands in its portfolio. It was to be a fashion wonderland space harkening to a candy store.

The internal design team at Jones Apparel Group collaborated with designer Rachel Roy on her new showroom that would capture the essence of the brand which drew inspiration from art and Hollywood glamor and envisions what a Parisian apartment might look like discovered in New York City.

Collaborated with Howard Ash Inc (New York City) to develop the premium athletic wear brand's first temporary pop-up shop that opened in Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade shopping district to exhibit their new collection and advertising campaign.

With a limited budget, this Pop-Up Shop location in Soho, New York City for White House | Black Market utilized the bones and architecture of the previous footwear and accessories tenant as the starting point for this project. New paint, fresh finishes, visual merchandising, decorative lighting, and fabric transformed this space into such a successful project that the pop-up became permanent.
